Antique Victorian 0.78 Carat Old European Cut Diamond Solitaire Ring in 14K Yellow Gold
Tax excluded.
A beautiful example of authentic American Late Victorian craftsmanship, this hand-fabricated 14K yellow gold diamond solitaire ring, dating to circa 1880–1900, embodies the refined elegance and enduring artistry of nineteenth-century fine jewelry. Every element of the ring reflects traditional bench fabrication, preserving the character and individuality that distinguish genuine Victorian pieces from later reproductions.
At its center rests an original 0.78 carat Old European Cut natural diamond, graded approximately I–J color and VS1 clarity. Cut by hand to maximize brilliance under candlelight and gaslight, Old European Cut diamonds possess a romantic glow and distinctive faceting that cannot be replicated by modern cuts. Flanking the center stone are two original Old European Cut diamonds totaling approximately 0.08 carats, flush-set into the shoulders in the understated manner characteristic of Victorian design.
The ring is crafted entirely in solid 14K yellow gold, with no platinum or silver-topped elements, reflecting the construction techniques of American jewelers during the late Victorian period. The beautifully hand-pierced openwork coronet (dome collet) basket elevates the center diamond while allowing light to enter from every angle. Its irregular latticework, flat hand-fabricated shank, and simple flush-set shoulder accents are hallmarks of traditional nineteenth-century bench craftsmanship.
Unlike later machine-produced mountings, every component of this ring was individually fabricated by hand, resulting in subtle variations and exceptional character. The current karat stamp was added later, a common and entirely appropriate practice for authentic pre-1906 American jewelry, as federal hallmarking requirements were not established until the National Stamping Act of 1906.
Whether chosen as a unique engagement ring or added to an important antique jewelry collection, this ring represents more than a century of American craftsmanship. Its original antique diamonds, elegant proportions, and authentic Victorian construction make it a remarkable heirloom destined to be treasured for generations.
