A Genuine American Victorian Solitaire, Circa 1880–1900

A beautifully preserved example of American Late Victorian jewelry craftsmanship, this antique diamond solitaire dates to approximately 1880–1900 and features a distinctive hand-pierced openwork coronet, or pierced dome collet, mounting in solid 14K yellow gold.

The ring embodies the restrained elegance of late-19th-century American jewelry, with a simple silhouette elevated by intricate hand-fabricated construction and an original antique diamond.

The Center Diamond

At the heart of the ring is an original 0.78-carat Old European Cut natural diamond, graded approximately I–J color and VS1 clarity.

The Old European Cut was developed during the late 19th century and was designed to produce a distinctive combination of fire, dispersion, and candlelight brilliance. Its high crown, smaller table, and broader, hand-fashioned facets give it the softer, more romantic appearance prized in antique diamonds.

The warm I–J color is particularly appropriate to the period and complements the rich tone of the 14K yellow gold beautifully.

Victorian Openwork Coronet Setting

The most distinctive feature of the ring is its openwork coronet, or pierced dome collet basket.

The center diamond rises from an intricately pierced dome of irregular latticework, allowing light to enter beneath the stone while creating the characteristic elevated profile associated with Victorian solitaire mountings. The irregularity of the pierced work reflects the hand-fabricated character of the piece and gives the mounting a level of individuality that is difficult to reproduce in modern production jewelry.

The shank is flat in cross-section and hand-fabricated, tapering naturally toward the head. Together with the openwork dome, plain shoulders, and restrained diamond accents, the construction is highly consistent with American jewelry of the late Victorian period.

Original Victorian Diamond Accents

Two additional Old European Cut natural diamonds, totaling approximately 0.08 carats, are original to the ring.

The stones are discreetly flush-set into the shoulders on either side of the basket, providing a subtle continuation of the diamond detail without competing with the center stone.

This restrained treatment is characteristic of Victorian design, where the primary diamond and sculptural metalwork were often allowed to remain the focus.

14K Yellow Gold Throughout

The ring is crafted in solid 14K yellow gold throughout, with no platinum or silver-topped elements.

The complete yellow-gold construction, openwork coronet, flat hand-fabricated shank, and restrained shoulder decoration form a cohesive period design that strongly supports an American Late Victorian attribution.

The ring's karat stamp is believed to have been added subsequently rather than being original to the piece, which is consistent with authentic American jewelry manufactured before the widespread federal standardization of karat marking under the National Stamping Act of 1906.

A Piece of American Jewelry History

This is not a modern reproduction designed to imitate Victorian jewelry. Its construction, proportions, original antique diamonds, and pierced dome collet are all consistent with a genuine late-19th-century mounting.

The result is an exceptionally wearable piece of American jewelry history: an elegant solitaire with the romance of an antique Old European Cut diamond and the craftsmanship of a hand-fabricated Victorian mounting.

Whether worn as an engagement ring, an everyday antique solitaire, or added to a collection of period jewelry, this ring offers a rare combination of authenticity, craftsmanship, and understated Victorian elegance.
