Antique Edwardian 3.19 ct Sri Lankan Sapphire & Diamond Platinum Ring, c. 1910

This antique platinum ring dates to approximately 1910–1915, placing it within the Edwardian / Belle Époque period, one of the most distinctive eras of early 20th-century jewelry.

At its center is a substantial 3.19 ct natural blue sapphire from Sri Lanka (Ceylon). The sapphire is GIA certified as natural corundum, heated, with a round shape and crown modified brilliant cut with a step-cut pavilion. It measures 7.73 × 7.90 × 5.95 mm.

The sapphire is complemented by 1.04 ct total weight of natural diamonds set throughout the platinum shoulders and surrounding design. The openwork platinum construction, flowing decorative elements, symmetry, and combination of sapphire and diamonds are characteristic of Edwardian jewelry.

Platinum became especially important during the Edwardian period because its strength allowed jewelers to create exceptionally fine and intricate openwork designs. GIA describes platinum, diamonds, symmetry, and delicate ornamental motifs as defining characteristics of Edwardian jewelry.
